Clyde Bergemann Supplies Cleaning and Materials Handling Technology for New-Built, Compact Design Waste-to-Energy Facility on the Isle of Wight (UK)

Being a specialist for boiler cleaning technologies and mechanical material handling systems, Clyde Bergemann not only offers comprehensive solutions for large installations, but customised solutions for the most diverse applications. As part of the construction of a new, compact waste-to-energy system on the Isle of Wight, Clyde Bergemann supported German incineration technology provider Michaelis GmbH & Co. KG with boiler cleaning and mechanical material handling systems exactly suited for this kind of application.

With the target to divert 90 per cent of waste from landfill and recycle/compost 55 per cent of municipal solid waste by April 1st, 2020, the Isle of Wight council together with British waste management contractor Amey have started to redevelop the Island’s existing waste site at Forest Park in Newport. As part of the project, German waste-to-energy technology provider Michaelis GmbH & Co. KG (https://michaelis-umwelttechnik.de/) was entrusted with the erection of a new waste treatment facility. The modular system consists of a moved bed incinerator, a steam boiler, EC conform gas cleaning and high performance turbine and generator set.

In order to ensure extended boiler availability and increased boiler efficiency, Michaelis tasked Clyde Bergemann GmbH in Wesel, Germany (CBW) to supply cleaning systems capable of removing ash deposits safely and effectively while the boiler is operating. CBW will provide rotating element sootblower “DB” for the cleaning of the superheater/reheater area. Additionally, a SMART Rapping System with pneumatic operated rappers will be deployed, which are especially suitable for long-stretched horizontal boiler passes. Cleaning takes place by pneumatically driven impact cylinders that rap the deposited heating tube bundles and shake off the build-up material.

As the centre of competence for mechanical material handling in the group, Clyde Bergemann EP Tech, Italy (CBEPT) completes the scope of supply with removal systems for bottom and fly ash. At the boiler discharge hoppers CBEPT will supply an automatic mechanical ash removal system that conveys the bottom ash into a lean phase pneumatic conveying system. By using six motorized double flap valves the system is completely isolated from the boiler. The secure removal of the fly ash from the Economiser is guaranteed by segregating the subsequent hoppers with a special screw conveyor and a rotary valve.

Deliveries are scheduled for November 2018.

“This order not only shows our ability to offer tailor-made solutions for smaller applications like in the waste-to-energy industry”, summarises Dr. Christian Mueller, President & CEO of the Clyde Bergemann Power Group. “It also demonstrates how the combination of our knowledge in different business fields – in this case Boiler Efficiency and Materials Handling – can benefit our customers.”
